It escalates in unexpected ways we won’t spoil, but only a handful of encounters match the surreal highlights of visiting Canada or fighting Khloe Kardashian’s aborted foetus in The Stick Of Truth.

This time it reprises their superhero alter-egos, with Cartman’s faction Coon & Friends and Kenny’s Freedom Pals in a race to find a stolen cat to secure a $100 reward and fund plans of building multi-phase film and TV superhero franchises. In typical South Park style, The Fractured But Whole centres around a pretend scuffle between the kids, only to balloon into increasingly ridiculous extremes affecting the adult world around them. Surprisingly, the story is funniest when it steers away from parodying the world of Marvel and DC. Positioning and movement is now key in South Park’s combat (Picture: Ubisoft) Coupled with character summons, stat-boosting artifact skill trees, and spontaneous events like incoming road traffic, combat becomes a consistently surprising and flexible treat which boasts more depth than perhaps anyone expected. Character classes which riff on superhero tropes can be stacked upon one another, enabling move-sets to be mixed and matched to create a unique ‘new kid’ hero. The combat continues to expand with even more layers as you progress. There’s also potential for knock-back damage when enemies cascade into allies on the battlefield, along with attacks which possess status-affecting abilities like additional bleeding damage or confusion – which cause enemies to switch allegiances and attack team members for a specified number of turns. Each character class has four special abilities, all varying in power, the range of damage, and the distance from where they can strike. The game takes a while to explain the intricacies of combat because there’s a surprising amount to unpack. The opening hours introduce the revamped combat system building upon the Paper Mario-inspired mechanics with more varied abilities, increased customisation and, most drastically, added movement on a grid-based battlefield, reminiscent of turn-based role-playing games like Fire Emblem.
